THE MONSTER OF THE LAGOON ARRIVES IN MILAN

Hello to you all guys and welcome back! I hope everything is going for the best for everyone.

Today’s post is about a mysterious creature that has aroused interest in the eyes of many,  a smooth and black monster, with a big snake body and a horse head. It is the terrible vision that could appear to those looking from Punta della Dogana in Venice.

Legend has it that in a large cavity under this place, certainly one of the most scenic and evocative in Venice,   a horrible creature dwells, which is similar to a huge sea snake.

The monster of the black waters, as it is called, would be seen very rarely, and only in moonless nights, when the wind ripples the waters,  rendering the forms moving around indistinguishable .  The name "black water monster" would derive from this propensity to come out when the water of the basin is very dark, for the lack of the light of the moon.

Last September the Monster of the Venitian Lagoon has resurfaced under the eyes of the Milanese, in the area of via dei Mercanti.

Martino, this is the name now given to  the creature of the abyss, came to Milan on the occasion of the Italian Glass Week - Milan HUB, the most important international event focusin on  industrial and artistic glass and its workmanship. The event resulted  from the fusion of the year of glass designated by the United Nations, the Vision Glass Week and The Venice Glass Week.

The work of art was conceived and designed by architect and designer Simona M. Favrin and made by     master glassmaker Nicola Moretti. The inspiration came from the legend of a monster with a snake’s body and horse’s head narrated by the journalist and Venetian history expert, Alberto Toso Fei, in the volume "The secrets of the Grand Canal", a book on the mysteries surrounding Venice and the lagoon.

The art installation  is 6.5 meters long, 115 cm wide and up to 110 cm high. Martino is covered with an epidermis formed by 191 glass scales and is immersed in a water tank of 8 meters by 3.5 and 12 cm deep, where it can be admired  in all its shine.

What  makes the creature "alive" is, however, the technological system: under the "skin" we find a steel structure that hides an innovative technology by Forme d'Acqua Venice Fountains, the Venetian company specialized in custom fountains and water features. Forme d'Acqua, combining home automation, water and LED lighting at different temperatures, has managed to make a live work of art. It looks like it’s breathing!

In the words of Simona M. Favrin designer:

"Born in Milan and Venetian by adoption, I lived in Murano fascinated by the art of glass and I began to use thismaterial in my works and collaborate with the masters of the island. The symbolic union of the two cities in the name of glass and the fervor of exhibitions and events dedicated to glass excites me; that the Monster is once again the protagonist of this meeting is for me a source of pride and recognition for an importantprofessional goal, shared with the master Nicola Moretti, the team of Forme d'Acqua and the support of the consortium Promovetroof Murano."

The stages of the Monster of the Lagoon

The Monster of the Lagoon appears for the first time in preview at La Tenuta del Cavallino (Cavallino-Treporti, Venice) in February 2011 and since that day its journeyhas never stopped. It was in fact presented internationally at the Magazzini del Sale in Venice during the 54th Biennale d'Arte, and then exhibited in the Art Museum of the city of Ravenna, on the occasion of the international mosaic festival. One of it most important apparitions was certainly in March 2012 at the Basilica Cisterna in Istanbul, during a very impressive and unique event.

The work continued its journey by stopping in Bologna, Padua, the Murano Glass Museum and several times Milan.  Something tells us that Martino will continue its wandering in the coming years!

Forme d’Acqua: fountains that give value to spaces and materials

For Forme d'Acqua "fontana" is synonymous with sustainability and reliability.

Great attention is paid to the choice of durable and quality materials, such as glass, marble and steel. All fountains are designed with high efficiency German technologies, able to contain water and energy consumption.  Electronic panels for remote control, in fact, allow you to monitor consumption and report any anomalies.

The aim of Forme d'Acqua is to tell the story and the beauty of the company and of the territory that hosts it: Venice.
