WWDC is an Apple annual event where
hardware and software updates are presented.
In this article, I’ll give you a taste of all that, plus “one more thing” (the usual expression used by Apple when unveiling new innovative products) ... Apple Vision Pro!
iOS and iPadOS 17
Contact Posters
Contact Poster provides a new way for users
to express themselves, by allowing them to fully customise how to appear to
others when they receive a call. You can now set a full-screen custom photo, custom font and colour to better
express yourself.
Live Voicemail (available only in the US)
Americans usually use voicemail to leave a
message when the counterpart can’t answer the phone, but sometimes the problem
is that they just don’t want to answer now.
Now when someone leaves you a voicemail,
you’ll see the live transcription and can decide if it’s better to take the
call or not.
NameDrop
With NameDrop, you can now easily share
your number (your contact information) with other people by simply bringing
iPhones near each other. No more phone spelling and calls to share your number,
just a gesture!
Intelligent Autocorrection
With the latest transformer language model technology (used also by ChatGPT!!!) you will now be able to get better corrections while typing and also suggestions for new words or entire sentences.
StandBy
With StandBy Mode, when your iPhone is
being charged through a MagSafe charger and in horizontal position, you will be
able to use it as a smart desk clock and smart home controller.
With the new Journal app, you’ll be able to
create your own journal with photos, places, workouts, etc. and have your best
moments always accessible.
Interactive widgets
With interactive widgets, you’ll be able to
play music, mark a reminder as complete and so much more with the glance of a
tap
This year is a milestone for Apple Watch.
With the new watchOS 10, a new redesigned interface will provide more useful
information in less time. As a help, there is a new section for widgets, coming
to Apple Watch for a seamless experience between iPhone and Watch.
Interactive Widgets
Widgets are now even more powerful and personal on Mac. They can now be placed freely on the desktop and they’re interactive as the iPhone version, so you can perform powerful actions without opening any app.
Safari Updates
Safari got Profiles, so you’ll be able to
separate your work webpages, accounts, history and cookies from work and
personal usage.
Stunning Screensavers
With macOS Sonoma, you can put awesome locations slow-motion videos as your screensaver, having it animated over time, and when unlocking the Mac, the wallpaper will keep the last screensaver frame, getting you free from “jerky” monitor changes.
Gaming Mode
With the new gaming mode, games on Mac will
have priority over other computer tasks, giving you the best in-game experience
possible.
This year Apple introduced “one more
thing”, Apple Vision Pro, Apple’s first spatial computer.
It’s an AR (augmented reality) device that
will revolutionize the way we think of a “computer”.
Instead of using a screen, this new
technology will display all the information in the real world in an “immersive”
way, so you’ll be able to see computer-generated content seamlessly integrated
with the real world.
What can I do with this?
Theoretically, anything, practically, we
don’t know!
This is still a new technology: it’s like
when the first iPhone came out and no one really knew its potential.
Anyway, we can expect to use this AR device
as a replacement for the computer, because you have a web browser and other
workstation productive apps, but it can also extend it: for example, you can
use it to display additional computer monitors that can take “inexistent”
space, as they don’t occupy anything but they are generated on the ether. Also,
you can replace a big TV screen with these “goggles” and watch a movie as
you’re on a cinema screen.
Anyway, this device is so different from
our expectations and so innovative you can’t understand so much without a good
explanation and animations provided by Apple itself, so if you’re interested
you can take a better look here.
The only thing I can say is that this is
revolutionary and could change the way we see the world (literally!) and we
could expect in the future to integrate or (maybe) totally replace our
smartphones with a simplified and more portable version of this device.
What do you think of these updates to Apple devices? And what about the new Apple Vision Pro? Will be successful (and the future of computing) or just a flop? Let us know in the comments below.
