If you are a football lover, you know what a “derby” is. A derby isn’t an ordinary match. It’s something more! 

This is our very personal top 10 best matches in the world!

10. THE MERSEYSIDE DERBY

This match is called also “Liverpool derby” because there are 2 teams from the city: Liverpool and Everton. It is a really hot match and harshly fought, in fact it has the record number of red cards in an English match.

9. DERBY DELLLA MADONNINA

Milan derby is played by A.C.Milan and F.C.Internazionale. The rivalry between these two teams started also because they play in the same stadium. However, it has lost its importance because the teams are experiencing a crisis.

8. NORTH LONDON DERBY

Arsenal vs Tottenham, which are two of the best London clubs, is always a match with a lot of goals and it has never disappointed the audience.

7. ETERNAL DERBY

It’s called “eternal” for their rivalry: Red Star Belgrade vs Partizan Belgrade. In 2000, during the derby, the two teams’ supporters invaded the playground after 38 seconds from the beginning.

6. INTERCONTINENTAL DERBY

This match is also known as “Istanbul derby”; Galatasaray is in the occidental part of Istanbul instead Fenerbahce is in the oriental part. At first the two teams were friends but in the years they became rivals.

5. OLD FIRM DERBY

This match is contested between 2 Scottish teams: Rangers and Celtic. They have played more than 400 games, in fact it is one of the oldest derbies in the world. This match also has a history of violence between the supporters like invasions on the pitch or vandalism out the stadium. 

4. DER KLASSIKER

This match isn’t a real derby because the 2 teams , 2 of the best in German football, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, don’t play in the same city. The highest score in this match is Bayern 11-1 Borussia in 1971.

3. DERBY DELLA CAPITALE

This is our derby! In fact we are supporters of the 2 teams: I, Gabriele, am a Roma supporter and I, Alessandro, am a Lazio supporter. It’s always a match full of emotions and twists.

2. EL CLÁSICO

It involves the best footballers of all time: Messi, Ronaldo, Maradona, Raul … they have always given a show. It’s probably the most viewed match in the world and in our opinion Real Madrid and Barcelona are the best teams on the planet.

SUPER CLASICO

This match is always a show, mostly for the supporters: Boca Juniors vs River Plate. It’s the most important match in Argentina. When they play in the stadium “Bombonera” (Boca’s stadium) the show is unique, no comparison with other matches.

There are other beautiful matches like Derby d’Italia (Inter - Juventus), le classique (Marseille - PSG), Athens’ derby (Olyampiakos - Panathinaikos) and Manchester’s derby (Man.Utd - Man.City) but we couldn’t find space for them in our 10 list.
