YOU TUBE’S ANCESTOR: MY SPACE!

WHAT IS IT?

MySpace can be considered   YouTube’s ancestor. Before YouTube, ,Facebook and Twitter, MySpace was the social network par excellence. Thanks to this social, a lot of present-day artists became famous; for example Mika, Adele, Lilly Allen put their songs on this site. But after a great period of success the popularity of MySpace started declining.

HOW IT WAS CREATED

In 2003 a group of American people created the first version of MySpace. At the beginning of its career it had 20 million users and many of them were teenagers.
In 2005 MySpace was a great success. The founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg,, offered to buy MySpace  for $75 million. But then the site was bought by the New Corporation and ,a year later, it became the biggest social media in the world, with more than 100 million users. In the US, it also became more popular than GOOGLE!

MANY PROBLEMS

But after its great period of success, it began having problems and the biggest was “Politics, greed, all the horrible things that come with the big corporations”,said Sean Percival, who was the president of MySpace from 2009 to 20011. He also said that the site started putting ads and it interfered with the users’ experience.

TODAY

Today, MySpace has about 50 million active users, while Facebook, which in 2009 became more popular than MySpace, has more than 1.65 billion!
Now, the site has new owners and a new identify. In 2011 the singer Justin Timberlake and Special Media Group, bought it for $35 million.
It now concentrates more on music, films and celebrities than on monetization or social networking. It has also stopped competing with Facebook and has begun collaborating with it.
