Anfield is a football stadium built in 1884 in
Liverpool. Anfield could be considered a stadium like many others but that
isn’t true.
Today the Reds
play football in Anfield Stadium and if we go back in time we can understand
that Anfield isn’t only a stadium but also an amazing legend.
Liverpool F.C, founded in 1892, has always been a
great team and it has a great history, of which the stadium is the “main
character”.
Anfield and the club have always had a very strong
relationship but the myth of Anfield started after a football match in UEFA, in
a long and amazing night in 1974. In the first round of the quarter finals, Liverpool
faced one of the best teams in that time, Saint Etienne and Liverpool lost 1-0
in France.
Saint Etienne had to face Liverpool again in the
second round of the quarter finals and the French team was the favourite. On
the matchday, Liverpool was a revolutionized city because of the match. It had
to start at 7.30 p.m. but the Kop, the biggest bleachers area in Anfield, was sold
out two hours before.
Anfield that night hosted almost 60,000 reds fans. Liverpool
won the match with an exciting 3-1 but that night Anfield wasn’t the same. The
atmosphere was unreal.
Since that match, the stadium has been considered one of the
magic places of football. After that event Liverpool fans created a new motto
and wrote it in the tunnel that leads to the pitch and it is one of the most
famous in the world of football: “This is Anfield!”
In the last two years Liverpool has become one of the
strongest football teams in the world. The modern emblem of its myth is the
Champions League semifinal against Leo Messi’s Barcelona.
Barça won the first round for 3-0 at Camp Nou (
Barcelona’s stadium) but Liverpool performed an incredible comeback beating the
Blaugranas for 4-0 at Anfield. Liverpool won the Champions league in the same
year.
Also the numbers say that Anfield is magic. Liverpool team
hasn’t been beaten in it for about three years. In this season Liverpool has
never lost and it is the first team in Premier League with a difference of 22
points from Manchester City, the second one. Liverpool is one of the biggest
cities in England but it is unique from the point of view of football. Its two
football clubs, Liverpool and Everton, play in two different stadiums, but these are only 500 metres of distance one from the other.
On the day of the derby there must be real chaos in the city!
There will be
many other magic nights in this stadium and they will be incredible and
exciting. In football all is possible and in Anfield the impossible become
possible.
