Hi, everyone! Have you seen the new Netflix TV series directed by Tim Burton? “Wednesday” is trending on Netflix and everywhere online ! If you like his new TV series inspired to the Addams family, you will enjoy his movies too. I’d like to suggest you a few and I hope that you will love them as much as I do.
CORPSE BRIDE (2005)
It is an animated film directed by Tim Burton
and Mike Johnson. In an unnamed Victorian Era town, Victor, a young boy son of
fish merchant, is preparing himself to have an arranged marriage with Victoria,
the daughter of impoverished aristocrats. Victoria and Victor fall in love
immediately. Victor is stressed about the marriage, so he doesn’t succeed in saying
his vows. Victor goes to the wood near the town to calm himself. Thus he starts
a beautiful, odd journey from the afterlife world to return to the reality
helped by Emily, his corpse bride. It is a very good movie, packed with action,
music and love. Obviously, it is gothic, which it the signature in Tim Burton’s
movies, and we find the main features in his drawings, such as big eyes and pale
skin. The movie conveys a beautiful message: to let go of the person we love if
we are not part in their happiness.
CHARLIE AND THE
CHOCOLATE FACTORY (2005)
Have you ever seen it? It is his best known
movie. It is a cult movie beyond time, which has been part of many’s childhood.
It is a screen adaptation of the children’s novel by British author Roald Dahl dating
back to 1964. The most beautiful things in the movie are the dreamy, magic atmosphere and the gradual
discovery of Willy Wonka’s character,
who tries to forget his past, to control his negative thoughts and to forgive
his father for going against his dreams.
SLEEPY HOLLOW (1999)
It is a horror movie which is based on Washington Irving’s short story “The Legend
of Sleepy Hollow” (1820). In 1799
Ichabod Crane, a policeman, is sent from
New York City to investigate a series of murders in the village of Sleepy
Hollow, committed by a mysterious Headless Horseman. The English humour
decreases the tension of the movie, which is something Tim Burton uses in many
of his movies, especially if the actor starring as the protagonist is Johnny
Deep (it happens if “Dark Shadows”, too). If you like engaging stories, gothic
atmospheres, English humour and murder stories, this film is for you.
EDWARD SCISSORHANDS
(1990)
It is a fantasy movie, in which the main
character is performed by Johnny Deep . Winona Ryder, who you’ve probably seen
as Joyce in the Netflix TV series “Stranger Things”, also stars in it. Tim
Burton not only directed the movie, but also wrote the story with Caroline
Thompson.
One evening, a woman tells her granddaughter of a young man
named Edward, who has scissors as his
hands. Many years before, an inventor made a humanoid, which was called Edward.
The inventor educated him at home but died of a heart attack leaving him
unfinished without his hands. Peg Boggs, a door-to-door saleswoman, found
Edward alone and offered to take him to her home.
The genesis of Edward Scissorhands came from a
drawing by then-teenage Tim Burton, which reflected his feelings of isolation
and being unable to communicate to people around him in suburban Burbank. The
drawing figured a young man with sharp blades for fingers.
There are other beautiful movies directed by
Tim Burton, among which I suggest “The Nightmare before Christmas”, “Batman”,
“Alice in the Wonderland”. All Tim
Burton’s movies have an important impact on the audience; they are complicated, atypical, personal and
strange in a positive way. He is a genius and he is the symbol of isolated and
unusual people’s revenge. He became one of the most popular directors of the 20th
century thanks to his genius, his vision of the world and of human beings.
WHO IS TIM BURTON?
Tim Burton, Timothy Walter Burton, besides
being the renowned American director so many admire, is also a screenwriter, illustrator
and producer. He was born in Burbank, California. He spent most of his
childhood isolated and for this reason he started drawing cartoons and watching
old movies. His artistic talent was recognized by a company, when he won a
prize for a poster he designed. After high school, he attended the California
Institute of the Arts. Burton's first job was as an animator for Disney. Three
years later, he started to direct and write his movies, debuting with Beetlejuice.
His ex-partner, Helena Bonham Carter, inadvertently diagnosed him with
Asperger's syndrome. While researching for a role about autism, she found
several typical traits in him. Although
he had no official diagnosis, he believes that he falls under the autism
spectrum. In the majority of his movies we find actors Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Deep
and the atmosphere is always dark.
