Argentina has just won the World Cup. Messi is ready to raise the cup that any football fan dreams of. But ... wait! The Emir covers the Argentine captain with a black cape, the Bisht. That's rather weird. So I start wondering what that piece of clothing is or means. Do you know? I'll tell you about it soon, but first, let's step back for a while.
ARGENTINA IS THE WORLD CHAMPION
On December
18 2022Argentina became the world champion for the 3rd time in its history (1978, 1986,
2022).
Since the
beginning of the final game, Argentina started off strong and gained a 2-0 lead over France
by half-time. Both Messi and Angel Di Maria scored goals during the first half
of the game, with Messi scoring on a 23rd-minute penalty kick after a foul on
Di Maria. Thirteen minutes later, Di Maria scored after finishing off a
five-pass team move involving a deft flick from Messi. France's Kylian Mbappé
scored his team's first goal in the 71st minute and quickly followed up with
another. At the end of the regular time, the score was 2-2 and so it went to
extra time.
After
Messi's third goal in the 108st minute, Mbappé scored the team's third goal on
a penalty kick, becoming only the second player to perform a hat trick in a
World Cup final.
Eventually,
Lionel Messi's Argentina beat France 7-5 after penalty kicks in the Qatar 2022
World Cup final.
Despite
France's loss, Mbappé was awarded the Golden Boot as the tournament's top
goal-scorer. Instead, Messi was named the best player of the World Cup.
A lot of
people are already describing it as the most beautiful final in the history of
the World Cup.
We'll
remember many scenes from this World Cup, but especially one will be remembered
forever: the investiture of Lionel Messi by Qatar's Emir Tamim bin Hamad
al-Thani. Indeed, when the World Cup was awarded to Argentina's captain, a
transparent black cape with gold finishes was placed on the shoulders of the 10
albiceleste.
WHAT IS
A BISHT?
It’s called
Bisht and it’s a traditional male piece of clothing in the Arab world. It is worn for special
occasions, such as weddings or parties, by clerics, monarchs and tribal
leaders.
Its history comes from far away: its earliest uses date back to the fifth century B.C. In the past, Arab warriors wore it after a victory in battle or war.
On the
occasion of the world final day, which coincided with Qatar's national holiday
(December 18), it was also worn by the royal family and the highest local
authorities.
So the Bisht
has became a symbol of status and royalty.
So the An
investiture, Messi's, represents the Qatari royal family's respect for the
PSG striker who became a first-time world champion. A warrior who won together
with his national team.
The one given to Lionel was black, but it can also be brown, gray, beige, or white and is usually worn over a thobe, a tunic down to the ankles. It’s a fabric made up of camel body hair and goat wool. Is that the perfect material for ... THE GOAT?
