LET’S STAY FOCUSED!

The problem

When school opened in September we  were enthusiastic to write the word END on the experience of remote learning from home and to start learning again face to face at school. But the two years spent in lockdown left a deep mark.

At school both students and teachers have begun to complain that most students don’t manage to stay focused for a long  during the lessons or at home while doing their homework. Some  of them are even having serious difficulties to organize a simple speech or memorise a new content, they get distracted easily.

What  do physiologists say?

The average span of concentration in a teenager is no  more than  30/40 minutes. The period of forced isolation caused by Covid has  reduced it to at least to  10/20 minutes.

Adolescence is probably one of the most crucial and confusing  period in the life of a human  being . There are so many physical and psychological changes that a teenager has to face  in a short time. The pressure of school and now the Covid-19 epidemy have affected negatively on these levels of concentration.

Prof. Brett Hayes from UNSW’s School of Phychology says that a study on  4,000 students found that  30% had experienced  some memory problems, such as where they left their  mobile phone or trouble in focusing their attention when reading or watching something.

How to  help our memory and concentration ?

A survey reports that since February, there has been a 300 % increase in people searching  suggestions and advice to help their concentration,  such as  “how to get your brain to focus”, “how to focus better”, “how to increase focus”.  People are paying for apps and services, too.

Useful tips

Surfing around the Internet you can find a lot of suggestions about  how to stay focused ,  how  to study efficiently and obtain better results. Just to start,  check the technique called “pomodoro,  which    uses a timer to break work into intervals, or surf for tips suggested by psychologists or students themselves.

I have picked up some videos for you and I have embedded them below. Just  have a look, you may find good ideas that are perfect for you! If you find them, please,  let us know.
