THE FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN

Among the more common fears, the fear of the unknown is without doubt the most widespread but, have you ever wondered why we are so scared by the unknown?

Firstly, let's define the unknown: the unknown could be a person or a car we haven't seen before in our neighbourhood; a sound heard in the dark; a new experience we are going to face, like the first day of a new job, rather than the first date with a girl (or a boy). So, trying to define the unknown is difficult, because it may include so many aspects of our lives. But I would like you to notice something: it isn't important if the unknown is a good or a bad thing, an very important or a meaningless event: if we don't know what is going to happen, we feel scared, we feel anxious, and very often part of our mind suggests to shy away from the situation.

DUNNING-KRUGER EFFECT: THE PARADOX OF DELL

I know I do not know,” said Socrates. A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool” wrote Shakespeare.

For centuries we have known we cannot know everything and this is generally accepted. Nevertheless very often we say: “It’s so simple!” when we don’t know enough about a subject. That is called “Dunning – Kruger Effect”.

OTHELLO: EROS & THANATOS

In “Othello”, famous tragedy written by William Shakespeare in the 17th century, we find Desdemona murdered by Othello, her husband, which is an example of femicide. Therefore, already in the 17th century there was the idea of “crime of passion" which unfortunately is still relevant.

Now the question is: “Why does a man kill his lover ?”

FREUD: EROS & THANATOS

According to Sigmund Freud in the subconscious of human beings, two basic instincts (or drives) coexist, which he calls Eros and Thanatos.

EROS

It is the life drive, the tendency of human beings to look for pleasure, either carnal pleasure or moral pleasure. Eros is represented by a true relationship, true love or true friendship, but also the happiness due to good acts. In Othello, we can find Eros in the scene of elopement of Desdemona and Othello, but also in that of the murder.

THANATOS

On the contrary, Thanatos is the aggressive drive, the instinct of death, the instinct to destroy everything. It represents the manifestation of anger and of frustration of a person, a blind rage, which brings human beings to do all manner of things in order to vent this aggression, but with the result to be deleterious at the end.

MY TOP 4 MAKOTO SHINKAI’S NOVELS

Makoto Shinkai (pseudonym of Makoto Niitsu) is a Japanese director, animator and dubber born in  the area of Nagano in 1973. He started very early to make animated films, both short films and feature films. However, the success arrived only in 2016 with his most famous film “Your Name”, considered a best seller of Japanese animation
Nevertheless, today I'm not going to talk about his films but about his novels. Actually, he isn’t a writer, or rather Shinkai doesn’t consider himself a writer. What  he wrote is practically the novelizations of his own screenplays, of four of them. Here they are in my top 4 list.

NEVER TAKE LIFE FOR GRANTED - A TOUCHING INTERVIEW WITH MICHELE BRAVI

MY REFLECTIONS ON MICHELE BRAVI’S INTERVIEW

Last Saturday I saw a very touching interview with singer Michele Bravi on TV, which was the first interview he released after his involvement in a road accident where a woman died, a tough,  traumatic experience for him. One that radically changed his life.  In the interview Michele told about this dark period, and I was struck by his answers, his reflections and above all the way he expressed them. It brought me to some reflections I want to share with you all.

A POP SONG IN A FEW STEPS

Warning! This post is full of audios so put your headphones on and let’s get started!

1)TEXT: 90% of pop songs are love songs so we’re going to write a text about love. Well, in this case we’re supposed to use words such as sweet, love, heart... so love everywhere.

1a) VERSE: in the verse we can talk about our love for a girl or a boy: we can say we are falling in love with someone or that she/he is the sweetest person in the world; we want to kiss him/her for our entire life and so on.
