THE REGION WE LIVE IN. DO WE REALLY KNOW IT?

Hi everyone! We are Francesco and Nicolò. Today, in this article we would like to talk about the biodiversity of our geographic area, namely flora and fauna. Moreover, we will introduce some interesting curiosities .

First of all, we live in Subiaco, a small town not far from Rome where there are a lot of wonderful and suggesting landscapes.

Our area is partly placed in the Regional Park of the Simbruini  Mountains in which there is a remarkable biodiversity formed by many species of animals and plants .

The most diffused animals are the wolf, the deer and the boar. Instead, the most diffused plants are the beech, the gentian and the chestnut.

This park is almost completely covered by woods, sometimes interrupted by small and nice villages. The Aniene river, the amazing landscapes and the inviting local history play a crucial role in attracting tourists.
For instance, in Cervara, near [MG1] Subiaco, there is a place called “Prataglia” where the deer are protected within a tailored reserve.

Top 10 places definitely worth a visit

4. Rocca Abbaziale (Medieval Fortress)
7. Le Vedute
8. Monte Autore
9. St. Chelidonia
10. St. Benedict’s lake

Curiosities
·
GENTIAN - In our area there is a protected plant called gentian that is used to prepare a distilled  alcoholic drink , reason for which the uncontrolled harvest is forbidden.

VIVERE L’ANIENE - An association called “Vivere l’Aniene” organizes rafting races, interesting  excursions and winter activities .

·      PALIO DI SAN LORENZO - It is an event recurring every 10th  August in order to celebrate St. Lawrence with rafting races between Subiaco’s neighborhoods. After the race there is the traditional award ceremony, during which the first classified team obtains the pallium and keeps it for the whole upcoming year.
