Probably know Eminem as one of the greatest rappers ever. Well, you’re not wrong at all. And you know? He’s also one of my favourite singers, I like most of his songs. I’ve already written something about him on our blog and you can find and read it here. What I have for you today is ... 5 interesting facts about him that you may not know.
He won an Oscar
I bet you didn’t know, did you? Well, Eminem won an Oscar for Best Song in his autobiographical movie “8 Mile”. The song is “Lose Yourself” and it has been the first rap song ever to win an Oscar. That year Eminem didn’t even attend the Oscar Night because he thought his film wouldn’t win any of the awards. But, as we all know now, he was mistaken.
His Patrimony
Eminem’s net is worth more than 200 million dollars. All that money comes from several sources including albums, shows, acting, producing, merchandise and endorsements. He’s actually earned about $450 million since 1996 but paid out more than $260 million in duties. He also made about $60 million from investments. In 2003 the American rapper bought a huge mansion for $4.75 million in Rochester Hills, Michigan.
Alter egos
Eminem’s real name is Marshall Mathers but you may also know him as Slim Shady. Slim is his best-known alter ego and it first appeared on his “Slim Shady EP”. He’s mostly used it in his lyrics to sing about a dark and violent Eminem.
“Killshot”
In Eminem’s last album “Kamikaze”, Marshall made, with the song “Not Alike”, several disses aimed at another American rapper called Machine Gun Kelly (MGK). MGK responded just a few days later with his song “Rap Devil” (the title of the song comes from Eminem’s song “Rap God”). At that time Eminem explained in an interview that he actually didn’t know how to respond so as not to make MGK reach a bigger audience. Anyway, only ten days later Eminem released his response in his song “Killshot”. The song got over 38.1 million views within the first 24 hours since its release on YouTube and becoming the biggest YouTube debut for a hip hop video ever. MGK hasn’t responded yet. What do you think, will he?
Unusual fans
Did you know that the 1995 Literature Nobel Prize Seamus Heaney was his fan? Heaney died in 2013 but, in a previous interview dated 2003, he said:
“There is this guy Eminem. He has created a sense of what is possible. He has sent a voltage around a generation. He has done this not just through his subversive attitude, but also his verbal energy”.
Whereas, Professor of poetry at Oxford University Paul Muldoon added:
“One thing I would say about Eminem and rappers in general is that despite the fact that the subject matter is sometimes more than near the knuckle, they do valorise the word in a way that lyricists generally don’t”.
