EA SPORTS FIFA:STORY OF A VIDEO GAME IN CONSTANT EVOLUTION

Yesterday I was watching videos on YouTube and, scrolling down the home page, I saw a video about the history of a video game and I thought: "Why don’t I do something like this for my favorite video game?". Well, not a video,  but a post with its history.  Anyway, here’s the story of my favourite video game: FIFA

THE BEGINNINGS

EA Sports began the FIFA series in 1993, hoping to develop a hold on football in the same way that they dominated the market for American gridiron football gaming with Madden NFL.

This video game started with the title of “Fifa International Soccer” because the game included only national teams.

In the offices of EA no one believed in the explosion of this game but, one evening in September, in the various offices, something happened.

Jan Tian, the main developer of the video game, in fact said that the demo of the game had started circulating in the offices and, one evening, an EA executive watched a game between two employees, being stunned and forcing the game to be released early.

So,the long-awaited moment arrived and the game was released.

WHY THE NAME “FIFA”?

During the creation of the game, some executives considered what to call the game and, in the end, it was decided to go and deal with FIFA itself to have its name in the videogame.

We are at the end of the summer of 1993 in Lucerne we are talking about buying the brand.

The negotiation was really very short and inexpensive, although Tom Stone (EA executive) will never reveal the figures of this negotiation.

The name of the first video game was “Fifa International Soccer”(also known as  “Fifa ‘94”) and, it became the best selling game of the year.

THE TURNING POINT

The boom comes with FIFA: Road to World Cup 98, a video game that marked an era. EA introduces a new graphics engine, all national and club teams and the "Road To World Cup" mode. Furthermore, this is the first chapter to have an online mode. The cover of the Italian version with Paolo Maldini is historic. The next two editions are the last for the older generation consoles (with FIFA 2000 which, in particular, stands out for its high quality soundtrack).

FIFA 2001, on the other hand, represents a turning point: it was not only the first game to use the official uniforms of the teams but also the first to debut on PS2 and next-generation consoles. With the chapters 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005, FIFA adds "football" to the title and continues to proliferate with new gameplay, despite a graphics resolution that is not always impeccable.

FIFA NOWADAYS

Now FIFA has far surpassed its rival PES and has impeccable graphics, with the faces of the players the same as the real ones.
