QUEEN ELIZABETH II SAID STOP TO REAL FUR

The Queen has recently decided to move on with the times and to stop buying clothes made of real fur replacing them with ones made only of fake fur.

It has been announced by Angela Kelly, the queen’s dressmaker and confidence,  in her new book “The other side of the coin: The Queen the dressmaker and the wardrobe”. And after it a Buckingham palace spokesperson confirmed it, and a lot of British newspapers reported the news.

WHAT’S THE FUR-FREE MOVEMENT?

The fur-free movement fights against the mistreatment of wild animals, to prevent to make them live their life in cramped cages only to be crudely suffocated or electrocuted at the end. They need their fur coats more than we do. In the wilderness, animals are caught in crippling leghold traps for days without food or water. The fur-free movement has earned great success in the last years. A lot of fashion brands, including Gucci, Versace, Burberry, Michael Kors, Armani, have stopped producing fur items.

THE FUR-FREE AROUND THE WORLD

In California last year they  signed a law that forbids to produce, sell or donate real fur clothes. Also, in the London fashion week, they have been banned in all the runways show.
Even if the queen hasn’t forbidden the fur in the country, the UK has been the first state in the world to ban fur farming almost two decades ago because it was deemed too cruel.

WILL THE QUEEN THROW AWAY HER OLD COAT?

What will happen to her favourite mink coat, the one she has used for decades in several occasions? Probably she will continue to wear it, indeed even if the queen decides to stop buying new furs, she will continue to wear her old ones.

After all, the fur has always been the symbol of the aristocrats, and Elizabeth loves it. And it is also the symbol for excellence of the English royal family: the famous state suit worn during the coronation ceremony is lined of ermine.

WHAT DOES THE FAMILY AND THE PEOPLE THINK ABOUT HER DECISION?

A lot of groups for animals’ rights have praised the queen’s decision. Also Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton have always abhorred the use of clothes made with fur of mistreated animals.
