INVENTORS KILLED BY THEIR OWN INVENTIONS

Marie Curie

Bad luck, extreme courage, underestimation of danger: inventors’ life is not always paid back with success. There have been a few who we’ll always be remembered for their inventions, but there are some other we’ll remember because of their tragic deaths related to their own work.  Let’s see some.

THE TURK, THE BIZARRE STORY OF THE CHESS CHAMPION AUTOMATON

Automaton is a Greek word, meaning “acting of one’s own free will”. Today it’s used to refer to some kind of mechanism or machine that does something automatically. The concept of a self-operating machine is actually fairly ancient: in Greek mythology, the god Hephaestus often created living machines, like the giant defender of Crete, Talos. In China the legendary artificer Yan Shi is said to have created flying mechanical reproductions of birds for the Emperor.

But there’s one particular, much more recent automaton that deserves to be discussed. The so-called Turk.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! THOSE TIMES THE PAIN WAS REAL

Hello guys, and welcome back to our blog. Everybody knows how difficult it is to make a film, it needs a lot of time and work, and mainly perseverance.

The safety of the workers is the main thing to watch out, because no one would like to shoot  a film without any care for their safety.

Injuries and accidents usually don’t happen, because there are several rules to respect and nowadays the equipments are safer and more reliable, but perfection doesn’t exist and sometimes injuries can happen.  But  not always the bad comes to hurt and  the injuries I would like to list fit in the scene and are so perfect that  they were put in the film, making the film more realistic and gripping.

THE GOLDEN RETRIEVER

The golden retriever is a big, sweet dog that with a long interesting history behind. Its first appearance was in Scotland, in the mid-17th century, when hunting was very popular among the aristocrats. The characteristics of the  Scottish environment make it necessary to have a dog that was able to retrieve game both in water and on land. The prey often fell in inaccessible places, so they tried  to train some English Setters,  but,  unfortunately , the results were rather poor. So,  in order to obtain the perfect dog with the features they needed, the first retrievers were crossed with Water Spaniels, and  the Golden Retriever we know was born.

GUERRILLA

You must  have noticed I’m truly interested in history and among historical events, wars and conflicts have always fascinated me. Today  I would like to tell you about  a form of warfare used by small armies to destroy big ones:  Guerrilla.

Guerrilla is a kind of warfare consisting in small skirmishes between a big army and a small, mobile and often non-professional army which harass his opponent using his  knowledge of the territory  to make the other unable to fight. It is also called “hit and run” warfare.

RALLY LEGENDS: LANCIA DELTA INTEGRALE

Maybe it is a forgotten car now, but history doesn’t lie. The Lancia Delta  was born in 1979 as a normal, mediocre car. Giorgetto Giugiaro, a famous Italian designer and engineer, who had already projected the legendary Fiat Panda, created a new car with Lancia, that at first was unsuccessful but time has proven him right.

Between 1979 and 1987 Lancia produced 4 generations of the car, and every year the engineers introduced many upgrades of the engine, suspensions, inside quality and also of the body of the car. Actually, the legendary Delta HF integrale was born only in 1986. The last generation of Delta was the more successful. Producer added another powerful engine (in addition to the 1.3 68HP, 1.5 85HP Gasoline), the new 1.6 liter engine, supercharged by a turbo and with about 170 HP.

GENETIC EDITING

Life has existed on this planet for nearly 4 billion years. Human history begins only 300,000 years ago with the appearance of the Homo Sapiens and only in the last 65 years we have figured out how DNA works, built machines that could read it and then tools that could rewrite it. Technological development is faster and faster and with it more and more debates on ethics are opening up. One of these is about genetic editing: if humans had the technology to control the source code of life, what would happen when we turn it on ourselves?

AFRICA, POWER & PLASTIC

Big petrochemical companies aiming  at Africa

Petrochemical companies are producing more and more plastic but they have to face two problems : the first is that many trades are already saturated and the second is that only few countries are willing to become the dumps of multinational companies . A solution for the sector would be Africa and, actually,  the American chemistry council is trying to influence Kenya in order to make the government renounce the severe limitations imposed on the usage of plastic.
