PAY GAP BETWEEN MEN AND WOMEN

Very often we hear about the fact that women are paid less for doing the same job as men, which means women are paid less just for being women. But why does this happen?

It wasn’t very long ago that most women didn’t work outside the home at all. In 1950s there weren’t very many women in the workforce and the women there were were  often not as well educated as the men. 70% of them had menial job on factory assembly lines or in office and the only professional job was  teaching. Discrimination against women was also totally legal, allowing employers to put out job listing for men only.

WORLD WATER CRISIS

Water is the main source of life and without it we cannot survive. Nowadays water seems to us an inexhaustible good and we are used to wasting a lot of it, but in 2040 most of the world won’t have enough water to meet demand year-round. We’re at a real inflection point where if we’re not careful, we may get out ahead of our ability to manage it.

GENETIC EDITING

Life has existed on this planet for nearly 4 billion years. Human history begins only 300,000 years ago with the appearance of the Homo Sapiens and only in the last 65 years we have figured out how DNA works, built machines that could read it and then tools that could rewrite it. Technological development is faster and faster and with it more and more debates on ethics are opening up. One of these is about genetic editing: if humans had the technology to control the source code of life, what would happen when we turn it on ourselves?

It is one of the most popular competitive game in the world, commonly abbreviated LoL, and it is a multiplayer online battle arena video game developed by Riot Games. It has earned praise for its accessibility, character design, and production value. LoL is often cited as the world's largest esport, with an international competitive scene. The 2019 League of Legends World Championship had over 100 million unique viewers, with a minimum prize pool of US$2.5 million.

DEAR 2020

Dear 2020,

let's talk about recent and current events.

You started with winds of war between Iran and the Usa, which, fortunately, subsided after a while, and with the whole Australia that was set on fire. However, that was just the beginning!

Several things happened in February... The sudden death of Kobe Bryant and his daughter upset the world; in Antarctica the record heat of 20.7 degrees was recorded; Brexit came into effect definitively; once again there were tensions between Egypt and Italy over the arrest of Patrick Zaky, who brought back the memory of Giulio Regeni; and then the coronavirus began to spread around the world.

PANDEMICS

There’s one thing that is consistently ranked as one of the most likely things to end the world, that would kill millions of people: a pandemic.
A pandemic is a disease that escapes our control, sweeping across the world, killing millions and changing civilization.

ANIMAL INTELLIGENCE

One of the easiest intelligence tests is the “Mirror self-recognition test”, it’s on a very intuitive level and has something to do with self-awareness. The test is to put a red mark on your face, you pass if you recognize that it’s on your own face. Children begin to pass at around 18 months old. Chimps, dolphins, elephants and magpies: all of them passed the test. However, some monkeys don’t pass the test, even though they’re widely seen as intelligent animals.

ANXIETY

Have you ever had a panic attack?

Breathing very deeply and quick, like there’s not enough air to breathe; the focus narrows; you’re feeling a tingling in your body; you’re sweating.
This is what someone with a panic attack feels like. The panic attack is a form of the most common mental illness: anxiety.

DREAMS

“We are such stuff as dreams are made on”

(The Tempest by  William Shakespeare)

Humans have always seen dreams as mystical or as some kind of window into our deeper selves. They’ve reportedly inspired great literature like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, scientific breakthroughs like the arrangement of the periodic table of elements, hits like the Rolling Stones’ “( I can’t get no) satisfaction” and art like Salvador Dalì’s  painting “Dream caused by the flight of a bee around a pomegranate a second before waking”.
