Who invented basketball?
Basketball was born in the city of the Simpsons, in Springfield, in 1891 thanks to James Naismith, a Canadian teacher of physical education at a college in Massachusetts.
James Naismith |
He
needed a physical activity for the students to be practiced indoors on cold
winter days.So Mr. Naismith, inspired by the old Ontario game Duck On A Rock,
decides to place wicker baskets at the ends of the gym about 3 meters high and
invites his students to run by passing the ball with his hands with the aim of
scoring throwing it into the basket. He drew up thirteen rules and published
them in the school newspaper Triangle: that was the day, December 15, 1891,
basketball was born.
How do you play basketball?
Also
known as basketball, basketball is a sport in which two teams each consisting
of 5 players face each other to score points by throwing a ball into the
opponent's hoop 3 meters and 5 centimeters high with
their hands. The intense and rapid pace of the game, however, allows
substitutions with 5 other elements, sitting on the bench, for league games,
and with 7 others, for international ones. Each match, which obviously follows
very specific rules, lasts 40 minutes.
Where is it practised?
It
can be practiced both indoors and outdoors. The official competitions take
place indoors in large multidisciplinary facilities called sports halls where
there are particular playing fields 15 meters wide and 28 meters long, whose
floor, in wood, rubber, or synthetic material, is marked by white lines, 5
centimeters wide. Inside the field there are other lines, of the same color and
width, such as the central one, which divides the field itself into two equal
sectors and the one that delimits the area below the basket.
These
camps are also present outdoors, especially in cities, however made either with
concrete or asphalt; in this way we can have fun even under the immense sky.
What feelings does basketball arouse?
Basketball
helps us grow and not only on a physical level, as most people think when they
see a tall boy or girl walking on the street, but above all on a mental level.
It is mainly a team game so the sense of friendship, humility and altruism come
by themselves. Basketball is a bit of a philosophy of life typical of those who
are willing to make sacrifices for a team "victory" and of those who
see in the ball a means of personal outburst; basketball puts you with great
responsibilities maybe when we are forced to accept a defeat, but it mainly
arouses emotion and passion, the two keys to experience.
