Do you know that Milan is the capital of Italian Design?
Today Milan is one of the most modern cities in Italy. Over time it has become very important in the Art and Design world. Since the early 80s Milan has had its Design Week, an event that takes place annually. Milan Design Week showcases the latest creations of interior design. It started when some design companies decided to create a place where they could show their projects and design objects.
During the week the exhibitions
are located all over the city where one of the most popular areas is the Brera
District, today called Brera Design District.
All this was invitation enough for my cousin and me, so we decided to
get train tickets and go to Milan. We left early in the morning so we could
have the whole day and the first showroom was Gessi. Gessi is a design
manufacturer of luxury baths and kitchen faucets, shower systems and
electronically operated taps.
I really liked it, because it wasn’t just a big
store but a really cool exhibition! Each
element was placed in a unique space created specifically to make it stand out. Add
to that that each showroom warmly welcomed the visitors, offering us a drink or
something to eat.
One of the best experiences was visiting the
“Waw Collection”. In that showroom we found out a new way to perceive the
environment.
Their design was a curved tubular illuminated
glass, which rotating recreated the same effect as the sunlight when it
sparkles on the sea water. It was designed for different environments and
for each one of the four elements of nature: earth, water, air and fire.
On their Instagram page @w_a_w_collection, you can see their incredible creations with your own eyes.
Besides the interior design showrooms we found
brands like Bvlgari, Gucci, Dior and Hermès, who exhibited new artistic
projects.
At the Milan Triennale we could also visit the permanent exhibition. We saw many interesting items like the "Pratone" created in 1971 by Giorgio Ceretti, Pietro de Rossi and Riccardo Rosso. It was created to allow users to lie down, fall asleep, have a romantic date or also to teach children how to fall but without hurting themselves.
We also participated in an unprecedented
exhibition of an emerging Chinese artist.
Each of his works took at least three months to
be made. His work included various projects such as metal armchairs, which was
possible to try.
If you are in Milan I recommend you to visit the
Duomo and take a walk along the Navigli.
It was a nice experience which made us see things differently. I had no
idea there was such a vast world behind the world DESIGN.
