“A sound soul… dwells within a sound mind, and a sound body.”
Hello there! Quoting Maka Albarn, one of the protagonists, I would like to start talking about Soul Eater, about the anime that I watched some time ago. I really like it and I recommend it to all fans, especially those of the dark fantasy genre.
Soul Eater revolves around the students of
Shinigami buki Shokunin Senmon (Shibunsen), a vocational school for Meisters and their buki (demonic weapons that have human form). The school was created
by the God of Death, who is also the headmaster, and each Meister has a
companion (in rare cases two) with whom he fights. The ultimate goal of the
school is to maintain peace and prevent the rise of a new Kishin (a demonic meister who has almost plunged this world into
chaos). To this end, the students of the school collect Kishin eggs, which are
evil human souls. After absorbing 99 souls plus a witch's, the buki becomes a
powerful weapon that can be used by the Shinigami.
Obviously in order for the students to be able to cope with this task, both
Meister and buki attend the school and additional classes.
During
their apprenticeship, the students will, in addition to attending classes, be
able to take on missions that Shinigami-sensei
orders them to do. Almost always this involves facing an enemy and, then, being
able to eat their soul.
Unfortunately,
the anime doesn't faithfully follow the whole story of the
manga, so I also recommend to read the manga to know 100% of the story. But
despite that, I consider it an amazing example of Japanese dark fantasy
animation.
