MOST STREAMED ARTISTS, SONGS AND ALBUMS IN 2021

Happy New Year, everyone! May 2022 be better than its predecessors (fingers crossed).  If 2020 was the year that turned the world on its head, 2021 was the year we got used to seeing things upside down. With "normal" thrown out the window, people all over the world have begun to embrace the unknown and, in doing so, have championed all the things that make each of us unique. Not so bad, then.

Now I’d better move to the topic of my post. I thought I may share something I’ve found on Spotify: these are the 2021 most played artists, songs and albums. Are your best favourites among them? Scroll down and find out!

ARTIST

With more than 9.1 billion streams, in the first place we find Puerto Rican Reggaeton star Bad Bunny. He is followed by singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, who is also the most streamed woman. Rounding up 2021’s top three is BTS. In the spots four and five there are, respectively, Canadians Drake and Justin Bieber

SONG

Drivers license” by the young Olivia Rodrigo’s gained the first position on the most streamed songs with over 1.1 billion streams. The second place is taken by Lil Nas X’s “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)”, a song that heralded the artist’s first studio album. On the third spot we find the australian Kid LAROI with his Justin Bieber collaboration “STAY”. Again Olivia Rodrigo on the fourth place with “good 4 u”, followed by Dua Lipa’s “levitating”.

ALBUM

The fist in top albums of 2021 is Olivia Rodrigo’s debut album “SOUR”. Dua Lipa’s “Future Nostalgia” ranks second followed by Justin Bieber’s Justice. And finally we find in fourth and fifth position Ed Sheeran’s “=” and Doja Cat’s “Planet Her”.

 TRENDS IN 2021

During this year nostalgia played a role in people’s listening and fans rediscovered old favourites.

Certain social media trends from throughout the year were also reflected on Spotify. These included musical genres that hadn’t been celebrated for decades, as well as celebrations of rest that inspired playlists to match.

Earlier this year as vaccines started rolling out globally, fans celebrated the best way they knew how: by creating topical, themed playlists for rolling up their sleeves.

Throughout it all, people kept looking up at the stars, whether to see if life is out there, or to determine what life may have in store for us … and streaming all the while. Well, music can truly help us through the trials of life, doesn’t it? New Year's Resolutions? Let's listen to lots of good music! Till next month.
