MARTIN LUTHER KING AND HIS DREAM



During the Summer we read an article about Martin Luther King. He was a Protestant minister, leader of a movement for African Americans civil rights. However King was a great man first of all for his battles for the emancipation of black people. He even ended up in jail, risked his own life several times, but despite everything he kept living to reach his dream.

Martin Luther King was born on 15thJanuary, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was one of the most important influencers who fought for the civil rights. He was the youngest Nobel Peace Price in History; awarded in 1964, at the age of 35, he donated the money price to associations that were socially active. Martin Luther King was a very important example for all the black people in America in that period. He taught his people to fight with love: spreading God’s word and preaching; without any form of violence. He was the leader of one of the largest pacifist movements.



Curiosities

Here are some facts you may not know about Martin Luther King

·    The name

At birth his name was Michael King. Later on, when he was 5, his father went to Holy Land and he was fascinated by Martin Luther's vision of Christianity. Once he was back to America, he changed his own name and consequently his son’s.

·    Jail

Martin Luther King jr. got arrested more than 20 times, the first time because he attended the bus boycott in Montgomery. On that occasion the Supreme Court declared the illegality of the gesture.

·    Degrees

He got more than 50 degrees from universities all around America. The most important for him was the one in Civil Law in 1967.

·    Streets

There are more than 900 streets bearing his name.
