Between the skyscrapers of the Upper West Side and the Upper East Side, New York's Central Park divides the two residential districts and extends from 59th street to 110th street in Manhattan, with lakes, playgrounds, skating rinks and wide trails.
New Yorkers exercise there and tourists stroll around as the
park is open 365 days a year.
Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, Central
Park was completed in 1873.
It is characteristic in every season, but in the autumn, in
the evening, the green is tinged with yellow, orange and red.
From the Gapstow Bridge you can admire the New York skyline,
at the north-east end of the Pond and built in 1874 by Jacob Wrey Mold.The lake
is spectacular, has an unspoiled nature of swans, ducks and herons, and you can
take a boat ride.
The skyscrapers of the Upper West Side, which are reflected
in the lake, integrate a play of lights and colors.
Bow Bridge, a romantic cast iron suspension bridge designs by
architect Calvert Vaux who crossed the Bethesda Lake Terrace.
The Strawberry Fields were created as a symbol of peace in
memory of John Lennon, and the garden is embellished with plants from 160
countries of the world.
On Vista Rock, one of the natural rocks of the park , a
castle was built in the 19th century. For the beauty of the landscape it has
been given the name of lookout point.
At the Central Park Zoo there are lions, monkeys, penguins
and polar bears. The cartoon Madagascar was also set in this zoo. There is also
a special zoo for children, where you can pet goats, sheep and cows.
The reservoir was named in honor of Jacqueline Kennedy
Onassis. Today a popular place to jog.
A nice place to stop for sunbathing and picnicking is the Sheep Meadow.Next to the lawn is a building that now houses a famous restaurant called Taverna on the Green.
A beautiful garden that houses some of the varieties of
flowers and plants described in Shakespeare's plays. There is also a blackberry
tree, which is said to have sprung from a graft of a tree planted by
Shakespeare himself. The garden is located near the Delacorte Theater, where
his plays are performed on the occasion of Shakespeare in the Park from May to
August.
In Central Park there are five beautiful man-made waterfalls
crossed by New York's drinking water.
In the heart of Central Park, is Bethesda Terrace, where
street performers perform under the stars, for the good acoustics of the place.
In the center of the square is the Bethesda Fountain, one of the most famous
fountains in the world. It is also known as the Angel of the Waters and below
the angel are four cherubs which symbolize health, purity, temperance and
peace.
