Who are the Millennials?
Millennials are people who were born from 1984 on, so I am a millennial
and since I’m a part of them I’m going to refer to millennials using we.
So basically we are accused of being narcissistic, unfocused,
self-interested, tough to manage, lazy and entitled. The last one means that we
claim something without even working to get it.
All those adjectives describes
only a part of us because we aren’t all equal. Maybe the majority of millennials
recognize themselves in those definitions but it’s wrong to say that we are all
like that, it’s not good to generalize.
Simon Sinek on Millennials
Simon Sinek, an expert in this sector, says that we are narcissistic or
well, the majority of us is. I don’t think so because especially in youth there
are a lot of people who don’t have self-esteem and self-confidence, the just
don’t like themselves. They don’t like their body image because of the society.
People have “established” some standards, beauty standards are the one who
cause unease among teenagers. These standards have ruined teens because if they
don’t see themselves into those “beauty icons” they don’t feel part of the
group.
Unfortunately, who is different (or who we think is different) is no
longer accepted by the society. We say the world is beautiful for its diversity
but if we see something which is out of those standards, out of what we
consider “normal” we just judge it.
And all this loss of self-esteem is mainly caused by technology.
We live in a world with a filter, what we share online is not real life.
Just think about social media. We decide what to share on Instagram. We
only share the happy bits of our day, we only publish the pictures where we
have a nice face, but we’d never post a picture of us crying.

Simon Sinek also lists four main factors that cause unhappiness to the
millennials: parenting, environment, technology and impatience; but I’d add
another one which is related to environment: society. It is destroying us teens
with all those false stereotypes that don’t represent every single one.
Lastly I’d like to say my opinion on all of that: I agree with Sinek, I
think that in what he says there’s the truth of millennials: if we are not
satisfied with the environment, family or friends it’s not (totally) out fault
but the majority of our problems come from those points that Sinek listed.
We should stand up and fight against those stereotypes about us.
Here's the video we used in our lessons. Simon Sinek on Millennials.
