Can you imagine being a child with powers who
can save lives without even moving? Would you want to defend people, or would
you think only about yourself? What
would the people you love do to protect
you?
This Netflix series, Raisin Dion, comes from the same named cartoon by Dennis Liu. It is not set
in a dark scenery, but we see that the characters live their everyday life
naturally with ordinary concerns. Dion, the child who discovers he has
superpowers, lives in a uncomfortable
situation and the world surrounding him doesn’t help him feel better. In fact
the series deals with racism, he is victim of at school, and at the same time
bullying. He grows with the awareness of having a great gift and of having to learn
how to use it well
WHY I LIKE IT
I like this
TV series because it is not completely science fiction and not even a superhero
series. It refers to a natural phenomenon, that of the northern lights that
leads to a supernatural but interesting situation, with real references to
science. It is explained that during this colorful and amazing northern lights
the magnetic level in the place where it happened had risen considerably and it
may have been this that caused the appearance of superpowers in the people who
were there.
MY FAVOURITE CHARACTER
The best
thing of this tv series has been the actors who have transported me into a rollercoaster of emotions. I think the best character
is Dion’s mother (actress Alisha Wainwright, previously seen in Shadowhunters
the series). Despite not being the main character she is a substantial part of
this story.
A MEMORABLE SCENE
A memorable
scene of this series is the finale when Dion uses all his energy to defeat the
supernatural mass that had killed his father and wanted to kill him too. It is
a real surprise, because the protagonist
discovers something he has never suspected.
A BRILLIANT CAST
- Ja'siah Young is the protagonist of the
series, Dion, who lives alone with his mother and is the classic child who
dreams of having superpowers and then discovers that he really has them.
- Alisha Wainwright plays the role of Nicole Warren, the protagonist’s
mom.
- Jason Morgan Ritter
plays the antagonist in the series. But he was also Dion's father's best
friend, so he lived his life doubling up as Dion's protector and could even
kill him if he were the only one on earth to have supernatural powers.
- Michael Jordan
plays the role of the Dion’s dead father, who appears in the series only as a fog.
- Ali Ahn is the scientist who studies
the phenomena that occurred after the
northern lights in Iceland, which also affected Dion's father.
In
conclusion, in its complexity the show is rather interesting and entertaining, with
a finale to be considered as a true cliffhanger.
