BEAUTIFUL CLASSIC MOVIES FROM THE 1950s /60s

Hi everyone, today I’d like to invite you to a journey back in time and tell you about my top 5 best favourite classic movies from the 50s/60s. Do you ever watch old movies? I love them!

 LITTLE WOMEN

It is based on the book of the same title by 19th century American writer, Louisa May Alcott. There have been many adaptations of her novel, the oldest dates back to 1933 and the most recent was released in 2019. My favourite version is the 1949 film.

The four March sisters, Margaret, Josephine, Elizabeth and Amy are the protagonists of the story.

This story deals with issues like female emancipation and coming of age. Those issues are still relevant to today’s teenagers this is why Little Women is an evergreen story.

SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS

It is a 1954 American comedy musical directed by Stanley Donen, set in a village in Oregon in 1850, where the seven Pontipee brothers live. Adam, (played by Howard Keel) the elder brother, is determined to take wife, so he goes to the village and on that very day he marries with Milly, a young strong woman from the village (played by Jane Powell).

On the day of the village festival all the seven brothers meet seven young women. So, since they couldn’t court them, they decided to kidnap them and keep them in the bay. The girls little by little starts loving  the seven brothers and finally decide to marry them.

Recently the musical was at the Brancaccio theatre in Rome and  I saw it.  It was wonderful, excellent performances, especially actress/singer Diana del Bufalo who was amazing.

SISI

It’s a 1955 Austrian film directed by Ernst Marischka. “Sisi” is the first of a film trilogy on the life of the Empress of Austria, Elisabeth of Bavaria (played by Romy Schneider). It is about how she met Franz, the emperor, (played by Karlheinz Böhm). The other two films were  1956 The Young Empress and  1957 Sissi - The Fate of an Empress . They deal with the first years of marriage and then the following journeys and health problems.

MY FAIR LADY

My Fair Lady is a 1964 American musical drama film. Professor Higgins, (played by Rex Harrison), bets with his friend Pickering to turn Eliza Doolittle (played by Audrey Hepburn), into a classy woman. She was a poor florist selling flowers in the street and the experiment was supposed to last about 6 months. After much work Eliza begins to be accepted by London high society. At the end Eliza and the professor fall in love and they’ll live together.

I love Audrey Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle and I’m not the only one. This film received so many awards!

Anyway,  there are a lot wonderful films starring Audrey Hepburn, which you must definitely see! My advice? Start with “Roman Holiday” or “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC

It’s a 1965 American musical drama, produced and directed by Robert Wise. It’s set in Austria in 1938, where Maria (Julie Andrews) has just entered a convent as a novice. She’s undisciplined and not very convinced of her choice. The mother superior sends her to be the housekeeper in  a widower ‘s house with seven children. The children became attached to her and also their father.  Despite many doubts, Maria falls in love with her employer and will stay in their house as part of the family.

Have you ever seen these films? What’s your favourite old movie?
