BACK TO THE PAST: MY TOP 6 OLD MOVIES

Hi, everyone! Do you like watching movies? I love it and I have a few best favourite ones I enjoy rewatching from time to time. Today I’d like to share my best favourite ones released between 1990 and 2001.

PRETTY WOMAN (1990)

Pretty Woman is now a cult everyone has seen at least once in their lives. It stars Julia Roberts and Richard Gere and shaped generations of girls and women.

It is a beautiful romantic comedy narrating the love story between a prostitute, Vivian Ward, and a handsome businessman in finances, Edward Lewis. It is an out-of-ordinary love story between two very different people, who discovered to have something in common which will change their lives and make them both become better. They become necessary for each other and succeed in changing their lives and themselves thanks to love.

Another movie focused on a beautiful love story that I feel like recommending to you is The bodyguard (1992). Its wonderful soundtrack includes, “I Will Always Love You”, sung by the female lead actress, Whitney Houston, who was, first of all, an extraordinary singer.

TIM BURTON’S THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS (1993)

It is an animated film different from other Disney movies because of its creator, extravagant genius Tim Burton. I really love Tim Burton’s stories, which are gothic, fantasy and unique.

His 1993 Halloween movie tells the story of the king of Halloween Town, Jack Skeleton, who wants to do something different and change his life. He wants to find happiness for himself and his city.  This film is not only for children because like other Tim Burton’s movies, it is an orginal story with complex round characters.

THE USUAL SUSPECTS (1995)

If you love thrillers and mysteries, this film is for you. I really love it, it is a long movie but it is brilliant. It tells the story of a detective investigating on a crime at San Pedro harbour. He wants to unmask and imprison a criminal, called Keyser S
ӧze, with the help of the only witness of  his crime.

It is a complex film with a lot of flashbacks, which describes the story, from the beginning to the end, of a gang of five men, who were shaped by Sӧze . The majority of people can’t guess who the real Keyser Sӧze is and the final twist and revelation will shock you for sure. Do you want to put yourself in the game? Watch the movie and  try to unmask the criminal.

THE TRUMAN SHOW (1997)

The Truman Show is Jim Carrey’s best film in my opinion. Truman’s story and his everyday life, is funny and bizzarre at first. But then you discover the film has two sides: behind  the  comedy, it also hides a dramatic reality, which makes it a thought-provoking, very interesting movie. It makes you look at your everyday life and at reality with a different attitude. I don’t want to give away any huge  spoiler in case you haven’t seen it yet,  because it is so good,  that I think everyone should  watch it at least once in their life.

GATTACA (1998)

If you love sci-fi movies and dramatic stories, Gattaca is a great movie to watch. Imagine to live in a world where a couple of parents could choose the DNA, the health and the appearance  of their babies, and babies, who aren’t conceived without following these choices, couldn’t have a normal life because they are imperfect and they have more possibilities to get sick or die. How could an “imperfect” baby live in a society who only wants perfection?

Gattaca describes this reality where the perfect DNA is more important than the physical and mental health of a person. The protagonist is Vincent, who was conceived without the help of science and this film focuses on his story.

A BEAUTIFUL MIND (2001)

It is one of my favourite dramatic movies. It is a perfect mixture of mathematics, drama and tears. It tells the story of John Forbes Nash, who was a mathematician and the winner of the Nobel prize for Economics in 1994. Russell Crowe stars in the movie as John Nash.

This movie tells about a long period of his life, which was troubled by schizofrenia,  and the relationship with his wife. It is a long film, but it is gripping and moving and you’ll be hooked by its thrilling pace and won’t be disappointed in the end.
