Edward Christopher Sheeran is the most-selling male pop star in the world. He has sold more than 38 million albums and 100 million singles worldwide. Two of his albums are in the list of the best-selling albums in UK chart history: x(at number 20) and ÷(at number 34).
÷ DIVIDE
÷ (Divide) was Ed Sheeran’s third album and it was released in March 2017. The album debuted at number one in the UK, US and other major markets. The album contains three of his most famous songs ever which are:
I. SHAPE OF YOU
It was released digital format on January 6th, 2017. The song was produced by Ed Sheeran and Steve Mac. “Shape of You” reached number-one of the singles charts in 34 countries, including the “US Billboard Hot 100”. It was on top of record-tying 16 consecutive weeks on the “Canadian Hot 100”, as well as 14 non-consecutive weeks on the UK Singles Chart, and 12 non-consecutive weeks on the “Billboard Hot 100”. It was the best-selling song of 2017 in the UK, best selling-song of 2017 and best selling digital song worldwide, combined with sales and track-equivalent streams of 26.6 million units according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry. The song won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.
II. CASTLE ON THE HILL
It was released in digital format on January 6th, 2017. "Castle on the Hill" was written and produced by Ed Sheeran and Benny Blanco. The song refers to Framlingham Castle in Ed Sheeran's home town. It reached number two in several countries like UK, Australia and Germany.
It was first time in the history of British, Australian and German charts that an artist had top two chart positions with two new songs. “Castle on the Hill” debuted as number six in the US while "Shape of You" entered as number one. This made Ed Sheeran the first artist ever to have two songs simultaneously at the debut in the US top 10.
III. PERFECT
On August 21st, 2017, Billboard announced that "Perfect" would’ve been fourth single of the album. The song was serviced to pop radio on September 26th, as the third single from the album in the United States. The song reached number one on the UK Singles Chart and the US Billboard Hot 100 in December 2017. "Perfect" became the UK Christmas number-one song for 2017, and also peaked at number one in sixteen other countries including Australia, Canada, Ireland and New Zealand.
There was also a second version of the song, titled "Perfect Duet", feat American singer Beyoncé, which wa released on December 1st, 2017. A second duet with Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, named "Perfect Symphony", was released on December 15th, 2017.
X
This was the second Ed Sheeran’s album. It was realised on June 20th, 2014 in Australia and New Zeland, and worldwide three days later. X reached top 5 in seven other countries and was the best selling album of 2014. And now let’s find out more about our 2 favourite songs from the album:
I. SING
It was written by Ed Sheeran and Pharrell Williams. The song was released on April 7th, 2014, as the lead single of X. The song became Ed Sheeran's first UK number-one single and also topped the charts in Australia, New Zealand and Ireland. It also peaked at n° 13 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
II. THINKING OUT LOUD
Written by Ed Sheeran and Amy Wadge and released in the US on September 24th, 2014 as the album's third single. In the UK, the song had been 19 weeks within top 40 before peaking at number one in November 2014. The single also reached the top spot in Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Denmark, Netherlands, Slovakia and South Africa, and peaked at number two on both the US Billboard Hot 100 and the Canadian Hot 100. It was Ed Sheeran's highest-charting single in North America until "Shape of You" topped the charts in both countries in 2017. "Thinking Out Loud" received nominations for Grammy Award for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 58th Grammy Awards, winning the latter two.
There was also a deluxe format of X. It had five bonus tracks including “I See Fire” and “All of the Stars”. Both of the tracks were soundtracks: first one of “The Hobbit - The desolation of Smaug” and second one of “The fault of the stars”.
