ROME G20 2021: LET'S SAVE THE PLANET!

The most important summit regarding the health of our planet was held on 30th and 31st October 2021. It is the meeting of the leaders of the 20 richest countries, who met in Rome, where they discussed issues such as climate change, global economy and the world vaccination campaign against Covid -19.

What are the objectives of the G20?

- vaccinate 70% of the population by 2022;
- reduction of methane emissions by 30%;
- global minimum tax rate of 15% on the profits of multinationals.

What is the G20 and when did it start?

The G20 is a group of 20 of the richest and more developed countries in the world, founded in 1999 after the 1997 economic crisis.

What are the participating countries?

The countries participating in the G20 are Argentina, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Canada, Italy, Mexico, France, Germany, Indonesia, India, Australia, South Korea , China, Russia, South Africa, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Japan, the EU and the United States.

Biden and the Pope?

A meeting was also held between the Pope and Biden privately, far from cameras. Among the various topics, the focus of the discussion was abortion.  Biden is in favour while for the head of the Catholic Church it must be compared to murder.

Conclusions

For once Italy was just under the spotlight and under the eyes of the world. Our Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, led the G20 works with expertise and diplomacy, showing everyone we deserve our place among the great countries.

Will this meeting really mark a turning point in the fight against climate change? Difficult to say. Let’s hope it has. But China and Russia, among the huge polluters, weren’t there? Will they ever change their minds?
